Renewable Energy On An Intercontinental Scale

Renewable Energy On An Intercontinental Scale
Countries around the Mediterranean sea have a coincidence of needs in that the Southern countries would like economic development (some foreign earnings) and the Northern countries would like cheap and secure energy.

Two projects have been promoted for a while that aim to utilise these complementary needs through application of renewable energy technology.

The first, called Desertec aims to build large scale solar energy plants in the Southern countries.

The second, Medgrid then aims to carry this energy to the Northern countries via a trans-Mediterranean HVCD (High Voltage Direct Current) network.

We could probably have gone a long way towards implementation except that trillions of Euros seem to have been squandered on a massive property boom. But that's another story for another post.
